Waste to Wonder – Transforming Waste into Creativity
The Department of Life Sciences (Botany and Zoology), in association with the Nature Club and Bhoomithrasena Club, organized the “Waste to Wonder” Competition on 5 June 2026 at Marian Hall as part of the World Environment Day celebrations. The programme aimed to promote environmental awareness and encourage students to adopt sustainable practices through creativity and innovation.
The event commenced with a brief inaugural session by Mr. Kiran George Koshy, HoD, department of Botany. During the inaugural address, the importance of waste management, recycling, and environmental conservation was emphasized. The competition highlighted the importance of responsible consumption and production, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12.
Students from various departments enthusiastically participated in the competition. Using discarded and recyclable materials such as plastic bottles, newspapers, cardboard, fabric scraps, and other household waste, participants created innovative products, decorative items, and functional models. Faculty members evaluated the exhibits based on originality, utility, aesthetic appeal, and effective utilization of waste materials.
A total of 22 students participated in the competition. After careful evaluation of the exhibits based on creativity, utility, innovation, and environmental relevance, the judges announced the winners. Ms. Eirene Antony, Third Year B.Sc. Zoology, secured the First Prize for her outstanding and innovative exhibit. In recognition of her achievement and to encourage sustainable innovation among students, she was awarded a cash prize of ₹500. The programme successfully fostered environmental awareness among students and inspired them to explore practical solutions for waste management through creativity and innovation
