Sacred Heart College,Thevara, Kochi, Kerala, actively participates in India’s Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA), a flagship rural development programme of the Government of India, through its outreach initiative Heartian Extend Arms for Life (HEAL). The college has adopted five villages—Kumbalangy, Mulamthuruthy, Chellanam, Amballur, and Kumbalam, with the objective of fostering sustainable development and community empowerment. SH College undertakes a wide range of activities in these villages focusing on environmental protection, food security, and clean water access. The college promotes fresh and nutritious food preparation, encourages mushroom cultivation as a livelihood option, and supports paddy field cultivation to revive traditional agriculture and ensure local food security. Awareness programmes on waste management, sanitation, and water conservation are conducted in these villages.
To strengthen community–academic engagement, SH College actively participates in UBA capacity-building initiatives and triainings, including the workshops on “Strengthening Community–Academic Partnerships: Tribal and Fisherfolk Outreach” held on 10 November 2025, and the one-day interactive workshop on “Water Quality and Sanitation” conducted on 16 January 2026 at Jyothi Engineering College, Thrissur.
The institution’s impactful UBA activities received national recognition when SH College bagged the Second Prize in the activities conducted as part of the initiative “Engaging Young Changemakers: A Health Conclave,” jointly organized by NOHM, ICMR, the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, and UBA, reflecting its strong commitment to social responsibility and nation-building.
