Sacred Heart College Hosts International Seminar on Kochi’s Cultural and Historical Layers
The Department of English, Sacred Heart College (Autonomous), Kochi, is organizing a two-day international seminar titled “Kochi – A Palimpsest of Histories and Futures.” The event explores Kochi as a unique cultural crossroads shaped by centuries of maritime exchanges, migrations, and layered histories. The seminar will examine Kochi’s evolution—from a modest fishing settlement to a vibrant port city—and its role as a site where local traditions continuously interact with global influences. Themes include the city’s resilient urban fabric, its colonial and cultural legacies, the impact of environmental transformations such as the 1341 flood, and the challenges coastal cities face amid climate change. Highlighting Kochi’s pluralistic identity and its complex negotiations between memory, space, and modernity, the seminar aims to foster scholarly dialogue on how maritime urban centres navigate historical depth and contemporary transformation.
