Master’s Courses

The Department of Mathematics, Sacred Heart College (Autonomous) Thevara, offers a post graduate degree program in Mathematics with a total of twenty theory courses and a project. The program not only enables the students at mastering the theoretical concepts of various branches of mathematics but also equips them with the necessary skills to succeed in competitive examinations like CSIR-NET, GATE and Ph.D. entrance examinations of institutions such as the IIT’s and the Indian Institute of Science. The syllabus of the program is developed on the O.B.E. (Outcome Based Education) pattern and the program outcomes, program specific outcomes and in particular the course outcomes of each course are clearly elucidated. The total credits of the program is 80, of which 60 credits are allotted for the core courses (there are 5 courses of 4 credits each in each of the first three semesters), 15 credits are allotted to the five elective courses (3 credits for each elective course) in the final semester, 3 credits are allotted for the project and 2 credits are allotted for the comprehensive viva-voce to be conducted at the end of the fourth semester. The project is to be completed during the third and fourth semesters. The overall focus of the syllabus is on enabling the students to mathematically model real world problems, develop their problem solving skills and enhance their logical skills and critical thinking ability.

This is a two year (four-semester) aided programme, in which the student has to earn 80 credits to be eligible for the award of the M.Sc. degree in Physics. The degree is awarded by the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. The curriculum of M.Sc. Physics includes all core papers Classical Mechanics, Mathematical Physics, Electrodynamics, Statistical Mechanics and Quantum Mechanics. It also have courses in electronics, condensed matter physics, computational physics, digital signal processing, microprocessors, spectroscopy, nuclear physics, and optoelectronics, in addition to a laboratory component which deals with a rather comprehensive list of experiments in the area of general physics, electronics and programming. The curriculum is designed so as to enable the student to gain an in depth learning in all major topics. Other than these, internship, study tours and lab visit related to different courses and a comprehensive viva and research project are other components of the curriculum. Our students who pass out are getting ample opportunities to find job or pursue research.

M A Economics is offered for Post Graduate students. The program gives the students an opportunity to explore advanced topics in economics and emerging trends in the subject. The program covers areas like,

• Advanced topics in Micro and Macro- economics, economic growth and development.
• Indian economy, International trade and Finance, Capital market and instruments.
• Public finance and policy, social sector, health and education, environmental economics, econometrics, statistics and research methodology.

Here the focus is more on student centric learning, guided learning, self- learning and research orientation. Industrial visits and internships give exposure to actual workplace to students. Training for NET examination, soft-skill training, project work, paper presentation and seminars are also part of the M A curriculum.

The Department of Chemistry was established in the year 1944 with the very inception of the college and it has emerged as one of the best learning centres of chemical Sciences in the state of Kerala. Currently, it offers one undergraduate programme (B.Sc. Chemistry) and two postgraduate programmes (M.Sc. Chemistry & M.Sc. Applied Chemistry - Pharmaceutical).    

A two-year Post-graduate programme comprising of four semesters is offered with Environmental Science as the specialization. This programme provide students with the opportunity to study animal life in all its diversity and includes structures, embryology, evolution, classifications, habits and distribution of all animals, both living and extinct. The programme helps to develop deeper understanding of key concepts of Systematics, Taxonomy, Biodiversity, Ecology, Biophysics, Biotechnology, Developmental biology, Physiology, Cell & Molecular Biology, Immunology, Microbiology, Environmental Biology, Environment pollution & Environmental management. The degree enables them to gain specialized knowledge in the area of research and offers job opportunities. The programme emphasizes a mix of modern molecular laboratory expertise, practical field skills & traditional taxonomy. We train our post graduate students to develop animal diversity identification skill, on-field data collection skill, basic data mining skill, presentation skill, observation skill, basic project management skill, basic dissection skill, as well as basic molecular biology lab skill and analytical ability. The postgraduate programme is designed to provide the students with a suitable foundation for careers in teaching, research, conservation of nature and biodiversity etc.

The M.Sc. programme combines theoretical knowledge, practical training, and research exposure to prepare students for the dynamic world of aquaculture and fisheries. The curriculum includes:

Advanced learning in all branches of chemistry. Deeper learning in specific areas like spectroscopy, co-ordination chemistry, organometallics, computational chemistry, thermodynamics and Synthetic and mechanistic organic chemistry and supramolecular chemistry will equip the students for research and competitive examinations. Novel Inorganic, Organic Physical & Computational practical sessions and hand-on experience with sophisticated instruments like UV-Visible and IR spectrophotometers will enable the students to pursue research or to work in chemical industries.

The MSc Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence) programme at Sacred Heart College  (Autonomous), Thevara, Kochi, is designed to equip students with advanced knowledge in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and data science.
