Disasters, Environment, Risk Reduction and Climate open course

This is the most comprehensive Course available today in the field of Environmental Science in the application level. It is based on the context of environmental disasters, global climate change and population growth. The number of natural and human-made emergencies every year has increased drastically in the past decade.  Although floods, earthquakes, droughts, and such other natural hazards cannot be prevented, their impact on communities can be limited through disaster risk reduction (DRR) practices mankind can adjust with adopting measures to cope up with it and or find alternatives to live on smoothly.

The purpose of this course is to encourage and practice Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) approaches that encompass prevention, risk mitigation, preparedness, risk sharing and response to disaster events to protect lives and improve livelihoods.

Climate change is known to increase disaster intensities and frequency by aggravating hazards and the factors determining vulnerability of environment, inhabiting communities and their resources.

There has been a paradigm shift in approach to disaster management from response and relief centric to risk management centric, and thus, calling integration of climate change adaptation and sustainability concerns along DRR into developmental process. Hence an understanding of DRR and CCA would help students from any discipline can plan job opportunities and to work in that direction.

This course introduces the concepts, tools, methods for disaster risk management, specifically for climate and weather-related disasters; role of policies and frameworks at international, national and sub-national contexts, with focus on emerging issues and recent developments.

It will give an interdisciplinary interest among students of other disciplines.

Course Objectives

  1. To provide a systematic knowledge base on disaster typology, risk, vulnerability, their impacts and concerns to growing hydro-met disasters,.

  2. To comprehend on approaches and measures of disaster management, preparedness and response, and related policies, law and methods.

  3. To enumerate on possible pathways, tools and options for CCA-DRR and sustainability mainstreaming through developmental planning at sectors, department or local levels, and activities

Outcomes

  • Students would widen their perspectives to realize that hazards become disasters only if they are poorly managed and that disaster management can be significantly improved by adding ecosystem components.

  • To develop a sound understanding of disaster risk and related underlying factors, their impacts.

  • To appreciate and comprehend on approaches and measures of disaster management, preparedness and response, and related policies, law and methodsUnderstand the significance of gender as a factor in both disaster risk and effects of climate change

  • Awareness of how they need to act differently on a personal and institutional level in order to deal with disasters in the context of climate change

  • To know various pathways, tools and entry points for integrating CCA-DRR and sustainability concerns into developmental planning across sectors, national, subnational and local plans and actions of DM.

  • Understand the importance of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) for disaster risk reduction

Opportunities

Having a certificate in this course would facilitate in getting jobs in government and private organisations including in the UN programmes. ( please see the detailed list in the down loads of Department home page)
