JAL PUNARJANI – Water Rebirth: A Science-Led Bioremediation Initiative
The Student Development Office and NSS Unit 31 of Sacred Heart College, Thevara, are organizing JAL PUNARJANI – Water Rebirth, a science-led, intergenerational bioremediation initiative aimed at restoring Kochi's canals, ponds, lakes, and stagnant water bodies through citizen science and student participation.
The programme will be launched on World Environment Day, 5 June 2026, as part of the Canal Revival through Citizen Science and Students Participation (CRISSP) initiative. The project is being undertaken in collaboration with CSIR-NIO Regional Centre, Kochi, and is envisioned as a long-term environmental restoration programme spanning 60 months.

JAL PUNARJANI brings together three generations to work towards the revival of local water bodies:
Young Scientists (Students of Grades 7–9): Preparing, rolling, and introducing probiotic balls into water bodies while actively participating in citizen science initiatives. Senior Citizens: Sharing local history, traditional knowledge, and memories associated with water bodies to strengthen intergenerational learning. Scientists and Experts: Leading awareness programmes, monitoring ecological changes, validating laboratory findings, and mentoring participants. Key Highlights Science-based bioremediation of canals and stagnant water bodies. Pre- and post-intervention laboratory water analysis with scientific validation. Quarterly efficacy monitoring for 90 days. Citizen science participation and certificates for student volunteers. Long-term school and community engagement for five years. Documentation and publication as an age-friendly environmental best practice under the GNAFCC framework.
The initiative seeks to foster environmental stewardship, scientific awareness, and community participation while contributing to the restoration of Kochi's precious water ecosystems.
