The Campus Bird Count
Students of Sacred Heart College, Thevara actively participated in the Campus Bird Count, an initiative aimed at identifying and documenting avian species across the college’s Lake View, East, and Communication campuses. The activity was guided by Abhay K. V., a student with over six years of experience in bird observation.
The Campus Bird Count is a citizen science initiative that promotes biodiversity documentation within educational institutions while fostering awareness about urban ecosystems. With increasing urbanisation and habitat loss, campuses play a crucial role as green refuges for birdlife. The programme at Sacred Heart College was organised to observe, record, and better understand the rich bird diversity within the campus.
CBC 2026 proved both informative and impactful. Participants gained hands-on experience in bird identification, enhanced their understanding of local avifauna, and developed a deeper appreciation for conservation efforts. The presence of wetland-associated species such as Black-winged Stilts, Sandpipers, Herons, Ibises, and Darters highlighted the ecological significance of the campus water bodies. The enthusiastic participation of students and faculty reflected a strong commitment to environmental stewardship, while the diversity recorded underscored the campus’s ecological value. Continued initiatives of this nature are essential for monitoring biodiversity and promoting environmental awareness.
