Blue Carbon and Climate Action (12-09-2025)

The Department of Environmental Studies, Sacred Heart College (Autonomous), Thevara, organized an insightful lecture titled “Blue Carbon and Climate Action: Exploring Ocean’s Roles in Carbon Sequestration” on September 12, 2025, at Fr. Dan Thottakara Hall, East Campus. The session was conducted as part of the college’s Environmental Lecture Series in collaboration with the ECOR Foundation. The resource person, Mr. Jishnu Panamoly Ayyappan, Co-founder and Director of the ECOR Foundation and NSTC Fellow at the National Taiwan Ocean University, delivered an engaging and informative presentation on the significance of blue carbon ecosystems in climate change mitigation. Mr. Ayyappan elaborated on how coastal and marine ecosystems such as mangroves, salt marshes, and seagrasses act as efficient natural carbon sinks by absorbing and storing atmospheric carbon dioxide at a rate much higher than terrestrial forests. He also discussed the ecological mechanisms involved in carbon sequestration and highlighted the urgent need to conserve these vital habitats, which face increasing threats from coastal development, pollution, and climate-induced stress. The lecture provided participants with an in-depth understanding of the ocean’s role in regulating global carbon cycles and emphasized the interconnection between marine ecosystem health and climate stability. The interactive session encouraged critical discussions and strengthened participants’ awareness of ocean-based climate solutions.
