The Department of Commerce, in association with the Commerce Association and IQAC, Sacred Heart College (Autonomous), Thevara, organized a SEBI SMARTs (Securities Market Trainers) Investor Awareness Programme on 9 July 2026 at Fr. Berchmans Hall from 2.00 p.m. to 3.00 p.m. The programme was conducted as part of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI)'s nationwide SMARTs initiative to enhance financial literacy and create awareness about the evolving securities market among students.
The resource person for the session was Dr. K. N. Prabhakaran, Director of Edify Ed Tech, Coimbatore, and an empanelled SEBI SMARTs trainer. He is also an empanelled resource person for NISM, BSE, NSE, MCX, NCDEX, and CDSL, bringing extensive expertise in capital markets and investor education.
The session focused on "Emerging Trends in the Securities Market", providing students with valuable insights into the functioning of the Indian securities market, recent developments in investment avenues, regulatory mechanisms, and career opportunities in the financial sector. Dr. Prabhakaran effectively bridged the gap between theoretical concepts and practical applications by explaining modern investment practices, market dynamics, and the role of regulatory institutions in ensuring transparency and investor protection.
A unique feature of the programme was its integration of ancient Indian economic wisdom, particularly principles from the Arthashastra, with contemporary financial markets. Students gained an understanding of how traditional economic philosophies remain relevant in modern commodities, derivatives, and investment strategies. The session also highlighted the importance of financial planning, informed investing, and ethical participation in the capital market.
The programme proved to be highly interactive and informative, encouraging students to explore career opportunities in investment banking, securities trading, financial analysis, and market regulation. Participants appreciated the practical orientation of the session and the opportunity to interact with an experienced market expert.
Overall, the SEBI SMARTs Investor Awareness Programme was a resounding success. It significantly enhanced students' understanding of the securities market, strengthened their financial awareness, and motivated them to develop responsible investment practices and pursue career opportunities in the dynamic financial services sector. The Department of Commerce extends its sincere gratitude to SEBI, the resource person Dr. K. N. Prabhakaran, the faculty coordinators, and all participants for contributing to the successful conduct of the programme.
