Department of Psychology organized a webinar on 25th May 2021 on the topic "Masked-up, Locked down and Screen-stuck-The Impact of Online Education on Mental Health". The programme was led by Dr. K.N. Jayakumar, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology, Periyar University, Salem. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, educational institutions are forced to move online. A considerable number of recent studies show that online learning has taken a toll on the mental health of students resulting in depression and anxiety. Keeping this scenario in mind, the webinar aimed to address the challenges faced by students due to the shift in pedagogy and equip them to cope with the stress.
The speaker discussed the effects of Covid-19 worldwide and its physical, psychosocial, and economic consequences on mankind. The session was focused on the impact of online education on mental health as Covid-19 has brought in a distinctive rise in e-learning whereby teaching is undertaken remotely and on digital platforms. Further, the speaker threw light on the various ways to maintain sanity. The relevance to identify, label, and accept emotions, engagement in creative works, need for social support, and the ways to develop self-discipline was highlighted. He also emphasized setting goals, time management, and self-audits. The session was concluded with an interactive Q&A session. Ninety-eight participants attended the webinar.
