‘Let Male Speak’-A session by Rahul Easwar
Department of Sociology as part of National Youth Day organised  an interactive session on the topic ‘Let Male Speak’ by Rahul Easwar on 12th January 2018.Students of 1st year MSc. Environmental Science, SH College Thevara along with faculty attended the session.The session focused on the need to understand the gender differences so as to live harmoniously.

International OZONE Day
On 25th August 2017 ,as part of International Ozone Day, Bhoomithrasena Club of SH College in collaboration with Centre for Environmental Studies, Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) and Directorate of Environment and Climate Change (DoECC) had conducted a poster design and elocution competition in the forenoon which was continued by an afternoon seminar session on "Caring for All Life under the Sun” by Linto Alappat, Department of Geology, Christ College, Irinjalakuda .During the session, Linto Sir spoke on Origin of life on Earth, Primitive Earth’s atmosphere, Ozone layer formation, Ozone layer depletion leading to ozone hole formation and various International Conventions for protection of Ozone layer with special emphasis on Montreal Convention.

Protest at MANGALAVANAM, Kochi
As part of our  curriculum ,the students of first and second year MSc Environmental Studies, Sacred Heart College Thevara along with our HOD James Sir and faculty member Remya mam had gone to Mangalavanam in Kochi on August 5 at 4:30 p.m  in support against felling of 182 trees for the development of the Southern Railway.A short meeting was conducted which was inaugurated by the former Minister of State for Forest and Wildlife, Binoy Viswam.

                    And in continuation with it, on 16th August human chain movement held in the  premise of  Mangalavanam  at 4:00pm in the presence of Madhav Gadgil, the famous Indian ecologist where students from various colleges joined in along with many environmental enthusiasts.

The Overview about the basic cloud computing concepts was discussed. The key concepts of cloud computing was discussed in the introductory session.
 
The set up for performing the deployment of private cloud was partially done. But due to unexpected delay caused in the installation of the software we could not complete the session on time.

The session commenced at 1.30 pm. A review about the cloud computing syllabi was discussed in the introduction session by Mr.Shabeer, CEO of Sappio. 

They discussed about the openstack, DigitalOcean and various other services. The Shift from virtualisation to cloud computing was explained in the session. Benefits of Virtualisation and Challenges of IT in highly virtualised environment was mentioned. The significance of learning cloud computing and the need for exploring the various cloud computing platforms was deeply explained.

For Hands-on session Mr.Vineeth taught the students how to launch an EC2 instance in Amazon web services. The session also included the deployment of web server. The team from Sappio included 5 members and they made the session helpful for the students.

Postfeminism and the Impure Politics of Resistance: New Directions in the Feminist Discourses

The seminar was inaugurated by Manager Rev. Dr.  Augustine Thottakkara CMI.  The presidential address was a memorable and thought provoking speech on impure politics of resistance and was delivered by Rev. Dr. Prasant Palackapillil CMI, the Principal. 

Prof. K Narayana Chandran from University of Hyderabad delivered the keynote address and the theme was Crossing Disciplines, Closing Gaps in Gender Education: Our Pedagogical Imperations. The speech was followed by a highly interactive discussion.

Later in the after noon Prof. C. S. Jayaram Former HoD of the Dept. carried out a plenary session on the theme, The Gender of Authorship: Issues of Female Representation in Feminist Art.

Dr. Joseph Cheruvelil is an alumnus of the college during 1953-55. He secured a scholarship to to continue his studies at Loyola University Chicago. Thereafter he became a teacher of English at the St. John's University, New York. This endowment is his tribute to his alma mater.

Zoology -1998-2001), now working as Staff Scientist at Baylor College of Medicine (Pediatrics Hematology/Oncology), Houston, Texas, USA, will deliver a talk on “Immunotherapy for the treatment of solid tumors” at 2:30 pm in Marian Hall.Dr. Sujith has vast research experience in immunology and vaccinology, especially translational research focusing on adoptive immunotherapy with gene-modified effector cells (CAR T-cells) to improve therapy for solid tumors, developing novel CAR molecules for multiple targeting of tumor antigens and delineate role of tumor microenvironment in anti-tumor responses of CAR T-cells.

About Inspire:  It aims at strengthening the knowledge of the talented students and expanding their horizon in science research. Also it intends to nurture the young talents who have inquisitiveness for research and are budding geniuses in science and technology. It paves way for the empowerment of scientific sector of our country. This camp provides an excellent opportunity for science aspirants to commune with the renowned scientists and to participate in seminars and lectures by eminent personalities.

About this camp: The Sacred Heart College, Thevara, Kochi is organizing a five day residential camp INSPIRE (Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research) from 9th to 13th of January 2018. This programme is being implemented by the sponsorship from Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India. This camp is organised by Department of Physics with academic inputs form Botany, Chemistry, Mathematics  and Zoology departments of Sacred Heart College.

Who can attend: This residential camp is for the XI students from the state of Kerala and UT of Mahe, who are currently pursuing science subject(s) in their higher secondary course in the ongoing academic year and not attended such camps earlier. 200 students will be selected, from the applicants, according to the selection criteria set by DST. Interested students who meet the eligibility criteria may register their interest by submitting an application via e-mail to inspire@shcollege.ac.in. Application form is available for download, at the college website.


Mentors: Scientists from IIT, IISER, & national institutes from India.

Important notes: All expenses of the participants will be met by DST. Participating students and institutions have no financial liability on their parts. Sacred Heart College, is organising an INSPIRE Internship Camp from 09-01-2018 - 13.01.2018. The camp is open to current XI science students who fall in the top 1% of those who passed the respective class X board exams.

The basic objective of INSPIRE is to communicate to the youth population of the country the excitements of creative pursuit of science and attract talent to the study of science. Department of Physics, Sacred Heart College, jointly with Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune and the British Council, organized four days Research-Based Pedagogy training (RBPT) workshop for graduate and postgraduate science teachers across India from October 11th to 14th 2017.  The workshop was completely funded by IISER Pune, MHRD, DBT and British Council and was conducted by a team of trainers from the Sheffield Hallam University, UK.

Greetings from Sacred Heart College, Kochi!
We are happy to announce that Sacred Heart College (Autonomous), Thevara, Kochi, jointly with Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune and the British Council, is organising a three-day pedagogy workshop for undergraduate science teachers from October 11th to 14th 2017 (at Riviera Suites, Thevara).

The workshop is meant for teachers of all disciplines such as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, Earth Science, Engineering and Technology. It will introduce participants to research-based pedagogical tools that focus on the process of science rather than facts. It will be a hands-on workshop with participants preparing their own teaching tools in groups and reviewing those of others. The teachers will also get an opportunity to share their own teaching innovations with their peers and experts in the field.

The workshop will be conducted by a team of trainers from the Sheffield Hallam University, UK and Indian experts from the area of education and policy. There are no charges to the participants selected for this workshop. Travelling Allowance will be given to selected participants.


The organisers will select ~150 teachers from the nominations received. 
This is a great opportunity for professional development for all teachers and the chance to interact with their counterparts from various colleges and education experts from India and learn from each other’s experience. From the tools developed during the workshop, scalable tools that could be deployed by other teachers will be identified and added to a national database. Selected participants will also get to participate in a Level 2 workshop later, that will focus on making them trainers for conducting similar trainings at local level.

Duration : Morning session for Aptitude test and Afternoon session for Interview.

BA English (Copy editor) VI Semester students will have their project Viva-Voce examination (External) on April 25 (Tuesday) at 09.30 am in the department. All the students are requested to be present at 09.15 am with their hall tickets.
