The Department of Botany, Sacred Heart College (Autonomous), Thevara, organized an environmental awareness programme titled “Carry the Change! Carry a Bag” on 1st July 2025 as part of its sustainable campus initiatives. The event aimed to promote eco-conscious practices among students by encouraging the use of reusable cloth bags and reducing dependence on single-use plastics.
The programme was organized to welcome the first-year students of the department, symbolizing a fresh start towards environmental responsibility. As part of the initiative, cloth bags were distributed to the freshers, reinforcing the message to “embrace reusable alternatives” in daily life. The event highlighted alarming statistics from Nature Reports, noting that India generates approximately 9.3 million tonnes of plastic waste annually—accounting for nearly 20% of global plastic pollution.
Faculty members, III year UG students and Ist year Hons. students actively participated in the event, which served as a reminder that small individual choices can collectively make a significant difference in environmental conservation.
The programme was coordinated by Dr. Aghil Soorya A, Faculty Coordinator, and Ms. Princey Mol A. P., Faculty Joint-Coordinator, under the guidance of Mr. Ebin P. J., Head of the Department of Botany. The initiative was successfully executed with the enthusiastic involvement of the III B.Sc. Botany students, who played a key role in organizing and managing the event.
Through this meaningful activity, the Department of Botany once again demonstrated its commitment to fostering sustainability and ecological awareness among the student community.
