The Department of Computer Science successfully organized a two-day Faculty Development Programme (FDP) titled “The Intelligence Equation: Mathematics & Statistics Through the Lens of Computing” on 10 and 11 July 2026. The programme aimed to explore the interconnectedness of mathematical thinking, statistical reasoning, and modern computing, while highlighting their significance in contemporary teaching, research, and technological applications.

The programme commenced at 9.00 a.m. on 10 July with a welcome address by the Faculty Coordinator, Dr. Arya Krishnan. The sessions were led by Dr. Shailesh Sivan, whose engaging and intuitive approach made complex mathematical concepts accessible to participants from diverse academic backgrounds.

The FDP focused on the role of mathematical and statistical foundations in key areas of Computer Science, including algorithms, artificial intelligence, data science, optimization, image processing, and other emerging computational domains. Rather than concentrating solely on theoretical concepts, the sessions demonstrated how mathematical principles can be translated into practical computational solutions.

A key highlight of the programme was its interdisciplinary approach, which strengthened the connection between Mathematics and Computer Science. Faculty members from Computer Science gained deeper insights into the mathematical principles underlying modern computing technologies, while participants with a Mathematics background explored their applications in contemporary computational fields. The sessions encouraged meaningful discussions and opened new avenues for collaborative teaching and research.

The programme recorded the participation of 28 faculty members, including three participants from St. Thomas College, Thrissur, along with faculty members from the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies of Sacred Heart College.

The FDP concluded on 11 July at 3.30 p.m. with a formal Vote of Thanks delivered by the Head of the Department, Dr. Cini Kurian. As part of the valedictory session, a Certificate of Recognition was presented to the resource person, Dr. Shailesh Sivan, in appreciation of his valuable contribution. Participation certificates were also distributed to all participants.

The two-day FDP proved to be an intellectually enriching experience that highlighted the indispensable role of Mathematics and Statistics in computing. The programme fostered interdisciplinary thinking, strengthened academic perspectives, and equipped participants with valuable insights that can be integrated into their teaching and research practices. The enthusiastic participation and positive feedback reflected the success of the programme in deepening the academic connection between Mathematics and Computer Science.
