The Department of Sociology at Sacred Heart College is one of the earliest of its kind in South India. Having been founded in the year 1964, it celebrated its Silver Jubilee in the year 1989. In almost five decades, the department has produced nearly 2000 Sociology graduates and qualified professional. On the verge of its forthcoming Golden Jubilee, the department is continuing its tradition as one of the college’s foremost centres of excellence, both academic and extracurricular. The Department upholds an unwavering commitment towards educating each generation of students in matters of social relevance and responsibility.
Outreach Programmes
The department regularly organizes social exposure visits and participatory activities including visits to with slum areas, orphanages, juvenile homes and conducts nature study trips. It collaborates with civic authorities in conducting surveys and field studies.
The department takes special care to help slow learners through special sessions and personal guidance after college hours.

As part of its extension programme, the Department of Sociology conducted an extensive socio-psychological study on the community evicted for facilitating the Vallarpadom Container Project at Moolampally and surrounding areas. The collected data is now being analyzed and interpreted. The Department intends to submit the report to the authorities concerned. The study is expected to give substantial information to the policy makers on the psychological health of the people affected by displacement and will help them make necessary preparations for the rehabilitation of people who are likely to be affected by future developmental projects.
