Department of Botany
 
The Botany Department (estd. 1957) is one of the prestigious postgraduate and research departments among the affiliated colleges in Kerala and is supported by the Department of Science and Technology under the FIST programme. The undergraduate programme in Botany was started in 1957 and M. Sc degree in 1984. In 2007 the department celebrated its 50th anniversary. The department has bears been organizing various academic programmes in and outside the campus. The department of Botany occupies the northern block of the college building and its facilities include spacious classrooms equipped with Internet and Delnet connectivity, advanced ICT aids like interactive boards and LCDs, a well-equipped tissue culture lab., a seminar hall, a computer lab, an Instrumentation room with advanced instruments like HPLC, PCR, Gel documentation system, Lyophiliser, UV visible spectrophotometer, Research microscopes with and digital photography. The department’s reference library contains the latest books and research journals. Its museum contains more than 500 exhibits.

The department was approved as recognized research centre of M G University in 1988 and has produced 17 Ph Ds till date. Apart from this the department has been undertaking major and minor research projects and has published more than 100 scientific articles in international and national journals. The department provides short term courses in DNA Barcoding Techniques, Plant tissue culture, Mushroom cultivation, Home gardening and landscaping and Bioinformatics for teachers, Research Scholars and PG students of Biology.
