Our New Admission

Our new admission is a tarantula! Known also as 'Tiger Spider', this huge spider was spotted in the kitchen of the priest's home of St. Antony's Church Machad, near Wadakkancherry in Thrissur District. Fr. Joby, vicar of the church trapped the spider live and this was a sensational  news in local newspapers. Fr. Joby was kind enough to donate the spider to the Arachnology Division of our college.  The spider belongs to the primitive spider family 'Theraphosidae' and has the scientific name Poecilotheria striata.  It owes its common name as 'Tiger Spider'  from the yellow striations on the legs resembling the body pattern of tigers.
Poecilotheria striata prefers to live in holes of large trees often made by woodpeckers, where it makes a silken home web. It lives for a period anywhere from 12 to 18 years. There are many myths and superstitions about this spider.  Deadly venom,  spider-like  transformation of the bite victim's body , etc. are some of these.  However, many of these superstitions lack any scientific basis.
The spider, measuring about 10 cm in length is housed in the vivarium kept in the Division of Arachnology.
