Department of Physics -Estd.1956

The Department was started with BSc degree course under the Madras University. It was elevated to a postgraduate department in 1995 on the occasion of the golden jubilee of the college and to a research department in 1998. Now it offers an undergraduate course with specialization in Optoelectronics and a postgraduate course with specialisation in Advanced Electronics. The faculty of the department consists of 11 members with three PhD holders and three MPhil holders. Two faculty members are approved research guides of Mahatma Gandhi University.

Apart from the programmes in the college the department has an extension centre called 'Mitradham', dedicated to research and development of ecofriendly, pollution free and technologically innovative renewable energy systems.

The department has separate laboratories for General Physics, Electricity, Spectrography and Computers with advanced facilities like CD Spectrograph, Electromagnets, and Oscilloscopes etc. The department reference library has a collection of over 2000 books and subscribes to about 15 journals.
