Department of Botany -Estd.1957

The Department was started with B.Sc Degree Course under Madras University. The Post-graduate course in Botany was started in 1984. Mahatma Gandhi University recognized this department as a research centre in 1988. At present this department offers a degree course with Phytochemistry and Pharmacognosy as elective subjects and a Post graduate,course with Biotechnology as elective. The department has 18 research slots. Of the 9 faculty members five are Ph.D. holders and research guides and two MPhil holders. The research centre has already produced 14 PhDs. Forty-three research papers have been published during the last 5 years. These include the project works of postgraduate students too. The department has separate laboratories for Biotechnology, Microbiology and Physiology with facilities such as Electrophoresis, Laminar Air flow Chamber, High Speed Refrigerated Centrifuge, Photomicrography, Pentium IV computers etc. There is a well-maintained museum with 250 exhibits. There are about 1000 herbarium sheets in the collections. The reference facility includes 2000 books, ten journals and collection of CD-ROMs.

  3. Prof. Mathew Zacharia Endowment for the best student in I B.Sc. Botany, instituted by former students, friends and teachers of the Dept. of Botany.
  4. Prof. Mathew Zacharia Endowment for the best student in 11 B.Sc. Botany, instituted by Mrs. Elizabeth Zacharia.
  5. Fr. Aquinas Endowment for the best student in I M.Sc. Botany, instituted by students & colleagues.
  6. Prof M.M. Appachan Award for the best student in III B.Sc. (Theory), instituted by students & colleagues.
