DIVISION OF ARACHNOLOGY -Estd. 1997

The Division of Arachnolgy is the only centre in South India engaged in Arachnology (study of spiders and related animals) research under the Department of Zoology.  The areas of research include taxonomy of the spiders present in Kerala, spiders as bio control agents, study of the feeling potential of spiders present in rice and vegetable agro ecosystems and the effect of insecticides on spiders as part of integrated pest management, effect of monsoon on spider population, diversity of spiders associated with human habitation (synanthropic spiders), behavioural study of the jumping spiders of Kerala etc.

The Division has so far identified more than 400 species of spiders from Kerala including 35 species new to science, 47 first reports and 55 endemic species. The division conducted field surveys in different parts of Western Ghats. Araneus himalayensis, a rare spider reported only in the Himalayas has been collected from Mannavan Shola, near Kanthalloor by the researchers. The research finding also include the documentation of  9 species of mygalomorph (primitive) spiders including the tiger spiders (Tarantuals), of which 4 are new to science.

The Division  published more than 30 research papers in various national international journals during this short span. The projects are financed by Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), University Grants Commission (UGC) and Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE)

The Division also launched a website on spiders for the first time in India www.southindianspiders.com.
Actiong as a centre for spider taxonomy in Kerala, the division has been doing spider identification services for numerous research institutions and colleges. Bothe within and outside the State and includes  Indian Institute (CPCRI) Regional Station, Vittal, Karnataka; Entomology Researcg Institute, Loyola College, Chennai; KFRI, Peechi, Thrissur; TBGRI, Thiruvananthapuram. etc.

Division of Arachnolgy  led by  Dr. P.A. Sebastian, Dept. of Zoology
