The department of Commerce of Sacred Heart College has the
distinction of being the pioneer in Commerce education in the state of Kerala.
It was one among the three colleges under the Madras University to start the
B.Com programme in 1944. The department started the Master’s degree programme
in Commerce in 1961 and in the year 1998, the department became an approved
research centre under MG University Kottayam. Today, it is ranked as one among
the top 25 Commerce departments in the country.
The department of Commerce of Sacred Heart College is a dream
destination for those aspiring to pursue their interest in the disciplines of
Business and Management. The department offers some of the best academic
resources for excellence, be it by way of faculty, infrastructure, library and
computers. While the college provides a blend of academic, cultural and
intellectual resources, the department brings to the students a dynamic
environment for the overall development of their personalities, aspirations and
talents in the discipline of commerce. The students of the department enjoy a
distinct advantage in the matter of employment in reputed organisations and a
good number of them are offered positions through campus recruitment, even
before they complete the programme.
The department of Commerce has a self-financing division
offering a UG programme with Computer Applications as optional subject under
the CBCSS system. The department is headed by Dr. Mathew Jose K.
The department has the consistently bagged 100% pass in the
university examinations and prides in producing a plethora of toppers in the
university examinations year after year, in both B.Com and M.Com programmes. 5
students of our department got A+ in the B.com University examination and 2 of
our P. G. students got rank for the M.com University examinations held in the
year 2013, we have 10 research scholars.
TANDAV a literary cum cultural fest was organized by the
department in dec, 2013 in which 166 students from 40 institutions
participated. Social outreach and interaction programme is part and parcel of
the departmental activities, apart from the frequent study tours and industrial
The department uses advanced technology such as ICT in teaching
in addition to traditional style of teaching at both UG and PG levels. The
class-rooms have been upgraded with ergonomic lighting, seating arrangements,
connectivity, audio-visual equipment etc. The class-rooms have however,
retained its heritage ambiance with its wooden furniture. The department
library is spacious with seating capacity for about 100 readers. It is
well-stocked and the collection has over 6900 books, including 300 reference
books related to Commerce and Management subjects. The library also subscribes
27 refereed Journals and 3 News papers.
The latest publications in the fields
of Business Studies, Economics, Commerce and Industry are continually added to
the collection to equip students with a wide range of academic material. The

facilities are provided in each computer. Printing and scanning facilities are
also available through network. The computer lab is equipped with uninterrupted
power backup. The teaching is imparted through ICT enabled techniques. In
addition, the computer center of the college is also available for the students
to accessing internet, do their practice and prepare their projects. In
addition to this, high-speed Wi-Fi internet access is also available free of
charge in the college.
