The College, as part of its Golden Jubilee (1994) started the Department of Aquaculture studies to meet the increasing demand for well-qualified and trained technical managers required by the aquaculture industry. Since its inception, the department has been offering postgraduate diploma in Aquaculture. M.Sc Aquaculture and Fish Processing, a four semester (two year) job oriented P.G course started in 2004. It is a self financing vocationalised course, in which the students are given on-the- job training in various sea food processing plants and aquaculture farms in order to equip them for employment as successful researchers, manager and supervisors. The post graduates of Aquaculture and Fish Processing will find suitable and attractive placements in research institutions, government agencies, shrimp/fish farms/ and fish processing centres in public and private sector. They are also given training in entrepreneurship to become self-employed.
The Department is also offering a three months certificate course on ‘Aquarium Science and ornamental fish culture’ for those who want to start ornamental fish farms/culture, from this year onwards. In addition to this, the Department is offering regular short term training programmes for those who are enthusiastic to become entrepreneurs/farmers/hatchery operators in ornamental fish culture as per their demand. The faculty consists of four regular members and eight scientists. It, being a multidisciplinary subject, specialists from National Research Institutes like Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, and National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources, Cochin also give classes on specialized areas.

Graduate Diploma in Aquacultue till 2004. Afterwards, M.Sc. programme in
Aquaculture and Fish Processing Technology was introduced in the year 2004
under M.G. University, Kottayam. The department is equipped with chemical
laboratory, instrumentation laboratory, processing hall for handling and
product preparation, experimental aquarium for multispecies ornamental fish and
bioassay facilities. Internship in Fish Processing Factories and National
Institutes are part of the programme.
The department is having two lecture halls, a Wet fish laboratory, Microbiology laboratory, Bioassay laboratory and a Multispecies Ornamental Fish breeding hatchery, computer facilitywith internet and departmental library.
a) Library: The department library has 780 books pertaining to the course (Aquaculture, ornamental fishes, Aquaculture engineering, Fish processing like biochemistry of fishes, freezing, canning, packaging, quality control and bacteriology. In addition to this the department also subscribes to journals on the relevant topic.
b) Wet Laboratory: (Processing and product preparation facility).
This laboratory has the facility for biological and ecological studies post harvest handling of fish, like icing, freezing, filleting, drying and salting and preparation of value added products of fin fishes and shell fishes.
c) Microbiology Laboratory: A standard microbiological laboratory fully equipped with state of art facilities. The laboratory has facilities for culture of bacteria, identification especially with reference to public health interest in fishes. Bacterial quality and quantity evaluation is also done in this laboratory. Accredited experts are available for training in culture, isolation and identification of pathogenic bacteria occurring in fish, Fishery Products and environmentd. d) Bioassay Laboratory: Experimental Aquarium: Evaluation of different fish feeds, growth and survival of larvae and adult ornamental fishes under different environmental parameters and identification of diseases of fish under cultured conditions are done in this laboratory. Live feed culture is also carried out here. There is facility for supply of aquarium grade fresh water to the hatchery and processing laboratory.
e) Algal culture laboratory: This laboratory is for the culture and rearing of live algal feed and its enrichment for hatchery practices in fish culture.
f) Multi species ornamental fish hatchery: This facility is intended to impart theoretical and practical training and research in the breeding and grow out of various ornamental fishes.
